Robotics as a Cross Discipline Organizer
Stephen Whitehead's study is funded by the National Science Foundation
and is being conducted through Cal U and CMU’s Robotic Academy.
The basis of the study is to research how
robotics can be used as a cross discipline organizer to teach STEM
education; our focus with be mathematics and technology education. Our
study will measure student’s attitudes toward STEM content and careers
before and after the robotics experience. The research focus is at the
middle school level and requires a mathematic and technology education
teacher agree to participate in the study. The teachers will be asked
to collaboratively teach using the Lego NXT Mindstorm robots and
fundamental robotic principles at the content organizer. The students
will be assigned a design problem which requires the employment of
mathematics and engineering principles for a successful solution. The
design problems have been developed by CMU's Robotic Academy and the
University of Pittsburgh's Learning and Research Development Center. The
activities are designed to focus on a particular mathematic principle
and be covered in one classroom session.
The linked PDF (CLICK HERE) has more detail for you to review. If you
would like more details please contact me at 724-938-4060 or by
email. Stephen Whitehead is
interested in recruiting Middle School Technology Educators for the
study. He currently has three schools that have committed but have the
funding to support 10 schools.

TEAP Name
Change Investigation
The Name Change Investigation Committee (NCI) was formed
on November 7, 2009, at the Saturday TEAP Executive
Board meeting. The committee was formed by myself, 2010
TEAP President Brandt Hutzel, to address the C-2010-5
(Investigation of Association Name Change)
resolution. Several committee members were charged with
writing a series of short articles to express varying
positions on the subject of an association name change.
These articles will serve to facilitate discussions by
all TEAP members using the NCI blog section of the TEAP
website. The NCI discussion on the TEAP Blog will
remain open January 6 - February 1, 2010. The NCI
committee will meet again via Skype on Saturday,
February 06, 2010 to review the blogs and to develop a
survey. The survey will be made available to all TEAP
members from February 8- February 24, 2010. The NCI
Committee will meet in Bedford on February 26, 2010 to
review survey results and formulate a recommendation or
report to give to the board on 2/27/10. Visit
www.teap-online.org/blog to find out more and get in
on the discussion.
New Ways
to Communicate & Collaborate
We
here at TEAP-Online have been hearing for years that you the members want
more way to communicate and collaborate with the association and with one
another. Area FYI, our page for
news and events, has now been moved to a blog format so not only can we give
you news and events from around the state and beyond, but you will be able
to comment and discuss that information. Check out the new and improved
Area FYI page and get in on the discussion.

Join ITEA's GREEN Initiative
ITEA's
2009 Louisville Conference was the launch date for ITEA's latest initiative
to help its membership become stronger leaders through the use of GREEN
initiatives toward building a sustainable environment. ITEA's President-Elect,
Gary Wynn used examples of GREEN initiatives such
as the ongoing statewide initiative by the TEAP.
ITEA Past President, Andy Stephenson, DTE, has volunteered to lead this
nationwide effort, which will include a website, learning communities, and
numerous other activities that will help ITEA members use their leadership
skills in leading education. To learn more about Mission Green, check out
more information on our blog at
ITEA’s Position
on the “T & E” of STEM
ITEA’s Board of
Directors, on behalf of its membership proclaims that the delivery of STEM
education content is closely aligned with the same core content as Standards
for
Technological Literacy. Furthermore, the goals of our content are essential
for all students to achieve both academic and technological abilities in all
career pathways and for future leadership in Technology, Innovation, Design
and Engineering.
