Energy Company PP&L is accepting grant proposals for energy and environmental projects at schools located near PP&L facilities.

The company's Project Earth Environmental Education Grants program directs focus toward renewable energy projects and energy conservation projects to encourage action in schools located near PP&L facilities. Through these competitive grants, teachers can receive $500 to $5,000 each in funding for school projects that focus on energy issues like renewable energy demonstrations, energy conservation, and the greening of schools.

All qualifying public, private, and parochial schools near major PP&L facilities are eligible for these competitive grants. (For a full listing of eligible school districts, in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, New Jersey, and New York, visit the PP&L Web site.) Schools are strongly encouraged to partner with an organization, association, or business on their projects, but the school must submit the application, receive the grant money, and have primary responsibility for the project.

Grants are available for projects that enhance established classroom curricula and academic standards, or support extracurricular activities of school organizations and clubs.

Science, Technology, Engineering,
and Mathematics (STEM) Governor's Institute
2008
July 28 through August 1, 2008

STEM is the Future of our Ability to Compete The Governor is committed to Pennsylvania's Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Initiative.

STEM is a cross-agency/cross-sector initiative led by the Department of Education to prepare the commonwealth for a future driven by innovation and global competition. A cornerstone of this effort is the formation of a state-wide STEM strategy, to align and enhance existing resources while developing new programs and partnerships that allow us to engage in a science, technology, engineering and math education redesign.

The primary goal of Pennsylvania's STEM Initiative is to dramatically increase the number of P-20 students entering Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics careers while continuing the development of effective strategies to retain, recruit and retrain our incumbent workforce in these critical fields.
