A
Classroom Close-up in STEM Education in PA
STEM education is the buzz, and it is growing stronger
and stronger by the day. PBS 39 (WLTB Allentown,
Bethlehem, Easton) looks at how students in PA schools
learn about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Integrating STEM in the Elementary Years:
Why It's Critical
to Start Early
Check out this recorded Webinar from eSchool News,
“Integrating STEM in the Elementary Years: Why It’s Critical to Start
Early.” Take a time out to learn from national STEM education experts
Celest Baine & Diana Laboy-Rush why the elementary years are so important
for engaging students in the STEM disciplines.

Robotics as a Cross Discipline Organizer
Stephen Whitehead's study is funded by the National Science Foundation
and is being conducted through Cal U and CMU’s Robotic Academy. The basis of the study is to research how
robotics can be used as a cross discipline organizer to teach STEM
education; our focus with be mathematics and technology education. Our
study will measure student’s attitudes toward STEM content and careers
before and after the robotics experience. The research focus is at the
middle school level and requires a mathematic and technology education
teacher agree to participate in the study. The teachers will be asked
to collaboratively teach using the Lego NXT Mindstorm robots and
fundamental robotic principles at the content organizer. The students
will be assigned a design problem which requires the employment of
mathematics and engineering principles for a successful solution. The
design problems have been developed by CMU's Robotic Academy and the
University of Pittsburgh's Learning and Research Development Center. The
activities are designed to focus on a particular mathematic principle
and be covered in one classroom session.
The linked Dissertation Study
Flyer has more detail for you to review. If you
would like more details please contact me at 724-938-4060 or by
email. Stephen Whitehead is
interested in recruiting Middle School Technology Educators for the
study. He currently has three schools that have committed but have the
funding to support 10 schools.
Join ITEEA's GREEN Initiative
ITEEA's
2009 Louisville Conference was the launch date for ITEEA's latest initiative
to help its membership become stronger leaders through the use of GREEN
initiatives toward building a sustainable environment. ITEEA's President-Elect,
Gary Wynn used examples of GREEN initiatives such
as the ongoing statewide initiative by the TEAP.
ITEEA Past President, Andy Stephenson, DTE, has volunteered to lead this
nationwide effort, which will include a website, learning communities, and
numerous other activities that will help ITEEA members use their leadership
skills in leading education. To learn more about Mission Green, check out
more information on our blog at
ITEEA’s Position
on the “T & E” of STEM
ITEEA’s Board of
Directors, on behalf of its membership proclaims that the delivery of STEM
education content is closely aligned with the same core content as Standards
for
Technological Literacy. Furthermore, the goals of our content are essential
for all students to achieve both academic and technological abilities in all
career pathways and for future leadership in Technology, Innovation, Design
and Engineering.
